From What I’ve Learned

The alumni who visited today taught us an essential lesson into succeeding in this business. Communication and networking is the key to getting you where you need to be rather than just having awesome artistic skills. Those in the business are likely to recognize you more if you make yourself well known in a positive like, than they would be more likely to view your work.

What I need to do now is get more involved in the meetings in which Pixar and other companies visit the campus, as well as gain an interest in Siggraph which I have yet to look into.

Even Higher Education

With all honestly although I know having a Masters Degree would help me greatly in the long run when it comes to pursuing my career, I’m not sure if I would want to continue pursuing it at Drexel. In contrast, CoMad only offers one co-op to the multiple co-ops other majors are offered which doesn’t allow me to financially support myself as well as the other majors, so If I do choose to get my masters it would be at a less expensive university.

On the other hand picking up a minor would be something I’m interested in, yet I have no idea at the moment what I would like to minor in.

Future courses I’m excited about

The course that I’m most excited in learning may be one that most people are excited for which is the Character Animation Course. From the examples I’ve seen of the 3D Organic models that upperclassmen have developed, the class seems very fun, and I have ideas that I would like to develop, as well as learning how to develop even better ideas.

One course that I thought would be in the curriculum would be one that focused on properly developing story lines and story boards. Although there is Digital Storytelling, the description seems as if it focuses on the effects of Digital Media in modern times rather than how to develop a story. Maybe a screenwriting class may be a good addition, although it could just work as an elective.

My Social Networking sites

I’m not much of a social networker beyond Facebook, and my Twitter account is basically inactive, but I’ll link to them regardless.

Where I see myself in 10 years

I always felt that the question of “where do you see yourself in the future” was one of the most difficult questions to answer. The thing is that life is so unpredictable, and where I thought I’d be ten prior to now, is likely highly different than what I thought was (then again, I was only eight, so those thoughts probably never caught my mind)

Everyone hopes that ten years in the future, after college is over, that they would be leading very successful lives in a career that follows the major that they studied in. I know it sounds like I’m about to to have a different vision of the future, but no, I hope as well that I too become a very successful person in my field. By the age of twenty-eight I hoping that I established a credible name for myself in the animation world, and though working for Pixar, Dreamworks, or some big video game developer sounds nice, I actually want to make something of my own.

What I would really like to do is create a serious animated series that would be shown on Prime Time television. Not something of the likes of Family guy, or Simpsons, but a series with a more mature, and edgy tone that would appeal to pre-teen audiences to adults. My series would have a following of the like of a show such as Lost, and other big name prime time television series. What I noticed was through budget restraints and just the pure limits of live action, that some of the more action oriented series seem to fall just short of delivering the cinematic experience that big budget hollywood films do. I feel that the show that I’m planning on creating would deliver a cinematic experience every week to television audiences everywhere without having to worry too much about issues, as the series would be completely animated.

So hopefully in ten years my name would be established or being established to be well known among other television directors, animators, and fans of genre of films I plan on developing.

Review of Analog in, Digital Out

Now admittedly when I was told that I needed to read a book for my University class, I pretty much just rolled my eyes and kinda put this on the back burner. What I didn’t realize, is that this wasn’t the typical reading assigned over the break. It’s actually a fun read. From the looks of it, it may appear intimidating, but luckily, he’s very straight to the point and simple, making it a very easy read (plus neat pictures) The book is narrated by the author Brendan Dawes, who is pretty much just an average guy who likes to tinker with things. He basically carries around with him, for the lack of a better term, a bunch of stuff to use at his disposal whenever he needs to. Through all the inventions and different ways of developing interactive media, he has made himself a well known person in the world of digital media, where he speaks at conferences and shows off many of the new things he just created(most of the time he literally finished just creating these ideas). A lot of the times his use of design comes from using analog things, such as play-doh, or people, and manipulating them into being used as code to display some sort of digital interaction, which is very neat. Although at times for those who may not be the most computer savvy, he’ll spout in pieces of code here and there, and they may put off some readers. Brendan’s personality may be a hit or miss for some people, as he may appear merely very confident to some, and probably somewhat snobby to others. Overall if you’re interested in the subject of digital media, this is a very fascinating book to read. I’ll give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
